Chimney of the Wood Company of Demetrio Fernández Castrillón, 1876.
On the esplanade of Poniente is the Chimney of the Wood Company of Demetrio Fernández Castrillón, documented since at least 1876, in this place that was the settlement of logging companies, among which was that of the Norwegian businessman Magnus Blikstad.
This factory had a mechanical workshop for sawing and molding and a forge undoubtedly connected to the aforementioned chimney. This vestige, which was popularly known as the Basurto chimney, because next to it was this glass company, is the testimony that remains of the wide strip of land occupied for years by the Cantabrian Shipyards S.A., closed in the eighties of the twentieth century, after the hard conversion process experienced in the bay of Gijón/Xixón.
